I have been watching a community group (including my mother) skin a caribou to make clothing. Skinning a caribou is hard job, however the clothing is very warm even in the cold winter. First you have to make sure the skin is soft and white and you can do that by using a tool called a scrapper. You have to follow instructions in order to do it right. Once the skin is good to sew, an elder will help you cut the patterns. You also have to make sure when you sew, the stitches are close together and are tight so that the person using the clothing can stay warm. It is very interesting learning about how to make traditional clothing.
First of all, I’d like to say that the Nanisiniq: Arviat History Project will be making a documentary film. When I heard about the Stories from Our Land which is a training opportunity for film making, I had decided to apply for it. One of our group members also decided to apply and luckily,we both were accepted for the Workshop held in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The workshop will be held from November 14-19 and I am excited to go and learn more about film making.
Secondly, here are some of the things we will be working on: approaching story, a producers job, the director at work, camera and lighting, sound work, editing, shooting a micro docmentary, conceive, pitch, plan, shoot, capture & plan, screening and critique of rushes and rough cut to final cut. I am excited to learn about all the different things that it takes to make a documentary film because it will be useful for our Arviat History Project if one of the members knows about film making.
Last but not least, I know that it will be a good opportunity for me. Therefore, I am willing to continue learning about film making and improve my skills. Not only is it good for our History Project but it is also good for me to have learned something new that can be useful in the future. I am hoping for the best on our history project with that experience from Stories From Our Land.
We as a group are finally meeting at last, we gather at Tamar’s which is a really fun. She really makes us comfortable whenever we come over too, I really like this!
Well we are still doing the job. We are now doing the pictures which we have to name. We are now done thinking of where we are going to go and interview, we will be going over to my dad’s this coming Monday. This sounds like so much fun, naming the olden pictures and get to know more.
We are really trying to make up our hours which is pretty tangled up for us the group, there is no room for us to do work at the college. But we are doing fine.
