I have been watching a community group (including my mother) skin a caribou to make clothing. Skinning a caribou is hard job, however the clothing is very warm even in the cold winter. First you have to make sure the skin is soft and white and you can do that by using a tool called a scrapper. You have to follow instructions in order to do it right. Once the skin is good to sew, an elder will help you cut the patterns. You also have to make sure when you sew, the stitches are close together and are tight so that the person using the clothing can stay warm. It is very interesting learning about how to make traditional clothing.
